Diesel

Why are people using a diesel instead of gasoline car?

  • Well there are a couple of reasons to do this. The first reason people are thinking about is, that diesel is cheaper then gasoline.
  • The advantage of a diesel engine compared with a gasoline engine is mostly the fuel economy why people choose a diesel car.
  • Modern diesel engines have overcome disadvantage of earlier models of higher noise and maintenance costs. They are now quiet and require less maintenance as compared with gasoline engines of similar size.
  • Exhaust system last longer because diesel fuel exhaust is not as corrosive as a gasoline engine exhaust.

If Diesel engines are more efficient why do most cars have gasoline engines?

Even though they are more efficient, there are eight historical problems why people didn't use diesel engines:

  1. Because diesel engines have a much higher compression ratios, trend to be heavier than an equivalent gasoline engine.
  2. Diesel engines are more expensive.
  3. Because the weight and compression ratio, trend to have lower maximum rpm ranges instead of a gasoline engine. This makes diesel engines high torque rather than high horsepower, and that trends to make diesel cars slow in terms of acceleration.
  4. Diesel engines must be fuel injected. In the past fuel injection was very expensive and less reliable.
  5. Diesel engines tend to produce more smoke then a gasoline engine.
  6. In cold weather, diesel engines are harder to start. Because of that most diesels are using glow plugs. And then it require you to wait before you start the engine.
  7. A diesel engines make lots more noise then a gasoline engine and tend to vibrate.
  8. The diesel fuel is less readily available then gasoline.
